Rejected Taxes

Do I need to wait for my fiancé to amend her taxes (taking off a child) before I refile mine with the child?

Will she be penalized for amending?

No, she won't be penalized for amending, but she will have to pay back any extra she received for claiming the extra child.

You can send it shortly after she amends, as it will take a while.  This will delay your refund as well.

No----waiting will not help you.   The only way you can file  and claim that same child is by mail.   You have been blocked from e-filing with the child's SSN on a 2023 tax return and even if you wait for months, you will not be able to e-file using the child's SSN.  Print, sign and date your return in ink, and mail it.  No, there is not a penalty for amending.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
