I filed 2023 taxes for my family already but mistakenly filed my stepson's return claiming himself, and left him off my return as a dependent. I should have claimed him as a dependent on my return and not his. What do I need to file to correct this on both returns?
By correcting this I should receive a refund of $292 Federal and $94 State.

@stpmsnwm377 Thanks for the question!!
If you are eligible to claim your stepson as a dependent on your return, then you will have to amend your 2023 return to do so. First, your stepson will need to amend & file his return & check the box that " he can be claimed as dependent on someone else's return".
If you try to e-file your amended return, it may cause a rejection because of stepson's SSN already used to file a return. Once your stepson files his amended return, it takes time to be processed by the IRS & their system to be updated. So, paper filing your amended return would be the only option for you now, unless you wait for his amended return to be fully processed by IRS.
Amended returns take at least 12-16 weeks to be processed. https://www.irs.gov/filing/wheres-my-amended-return
Do I file a 1040X to amend my returns, or do I make the corrections on both original returns and just re-file them?

If you have filed a federal tax return and it was accepted by the IRS then you will have to amend the tax return to make any changes to the return that was filed.
Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.

@stpmsnwm377 both of you will have to file a 1040-X return. If you have used TurboTax to file your original return, please follow instructions in the following link to amend the return.
