Hi,

If your car is registered in NY and you paid the registration fee in NY then your fees are not deductible.

Here's more info:

You can only deduct if you paid the fee in the states that have value-based registration fees. The states that do are in the list below:

  • Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Washington, Wyoming
What if my state isn’t on the list?
  • If your vehicle is registered in a state that’s not listed, then your fees are not deductible.
  • If you live in a state that doesn't tax the value of your car, but you paid car registration fees in a state that does, you may be able to get this deduction. Just enter the amount you paid on the Vehicle Registration Fees screen.
  • To find out more about your state’s vehicle registration deduction, contact your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles.

TurboTax transferred my car registration to schedule A as a deduction.  Problem is I live and registered car in nys.   This is not deductible.   Now I have to amend my return.   Very unhappy.   Turbo tax should know the state laws

Yes, as you see, New York is not on the list.
