You may be eligible for an energy saving tax credit for the installation of energy saving windows.

To enter it, type energy improvements in the search box and click on it in the drop down box and click on jump to.

OR You may be able to deduct your window replacement costs as a Non-business Energy Property Credit.

Qualifying improvements for the Non-business Energy Property Credit had to be installed in your main home and your main home must have been located in the United States. Energy-efficient improvements made to second homes or vacation homes do not qualify.

If I could not deduct this on 2018 taxes, can I enter for 2019?

If you reported it in 2018 and you could not take the deduction (see below), you may be able to carry it over to the following year (2019).    Did you report it on your 2018 tax return?  If you did and a carryover was generated, then yes, you can use the carryover amount on your 2019 return.   If you did not report in the year you made the expenditure (2018), then you would need to file an amended 2018 tax return to claim the credit or carryover for the following year.

There are times when you can't take the credit in the current year:

  • Your income is at a level that's not taxed at all.
  • You're getting other tax credits that have reduced your tax owed to zero.

If your credit can be carried forward to next year, we'll do that for you.  Related Information:

all the information I have entered is not allowing me to get my window credit?

This may be because of the way you answered one of the questions or because you are not eligible for the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit.

Some reasons you may not qualify would be:

  1. If do not have any tax liability to offset for 2025. This is a  nonrefundable credit.
    •  if you do have have a tax liability to offset, you will not see a difference in your refund.
    • This credit cannot be carried forward, it is a use it in the year of installation or lose it credit
  2. You did not install the windows on your primary home
  3. Your home was not in the US
  4. Your windows were not energy start certified.
  5. Your home was new construction
  6. You did not purchase them new
  7. You do expect the windows to remain in use for at least 5 years
  8. You did not enter a QMID

If all of that does apply to you, go back and double check your answers to be sure that they are answered accurately.

You can also check to see if form 5695 is in your forms list.  If this form is not in your list of forms, then it is telling you that one of your answers disqualified you from the credit.
