Once accepted, it can take anywhere from a few days to 3 weeks (21 days) to go from acceptance to approval, and this timeframe is unrelated to how, where, or when you filed, nor is it connected to how quickly you got your refund last year. If your refund is still processing, it has not been approved.

IRS representatives will be able to research the status of your refund if your return was accepted (received) more than 21 calendar days ago. Do not call this number if it has not been 21 calendar days since your acceptance. If it has, call them at 1-800-829-1040, but prepare yourself for a potentially long wait times.

The most accurate place to check your status is the IRS's Where's My Refund? site.

Mine was accepted by the IRS and the status still says it is processing. I’ve gotten no communication from them saying there is a problem nor have they requested any additional info. I’m at a loss for what further can be done. I’m due a sizable refund and it would be nice to get it.

I believe they have up to 21 days

Actually, the IRS can take as long as they want.   In the past, 21 days has been a goal, but not a guaranty.

The IRS is seriously backlogged this year, due to all the new tax laws and extra stimulus filings, as well as a few million unprocessed 2019 returns left over from the COVID shutdown.  Lots of folks are still waiting, so please continue to be patient. Also see:

@LatoshaSmith1

It can take anywhere from a few days to 3 weeks to update and show the status. The 21 days is just an estimated time frame. The IRS began processing returns on 2/12, you may not find a record of it or the website may say that you have put in incorrect information when tracking your federal refund. As your return moves through the system, the status of it will be updated. Since Turbo Tax will not have the status of your refund, continue checking the Where’s My Federal Refund tool for updates. Updates are made daily, usually overnight.

How long does it take to get approved by the IRS I was accepted on the 23rd of Feb

Once you are accepted, the IRS issues most refunds from e-filed returns in about 21 days, although some returns take more time to review. For example, the IRS is taking more than 21 days (and up to 90 to 120 days) to issue refunds for tax returns with the Recovery Rebate Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit.

  • To track your refund, you can use the IRS Where’s My Refund? tool (fastest option) or you can download the IRS2Go app to check your refund status.

  • Here is the general timeline of e-filed returns:
    Transmission > Acceptance > Processing > Approval > Refund.

@St3ady Trip - the only thing you can do is continue to have patience as the IRS is woefully backlogged.  If you paper filed, assume it is going to be 6-9 months from the time you filed. here is what the IRS states:

https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations-during-covid-19-mission-critical-functions-continue#collapseCollapsible1639064526818

How long you may have to wait: The IRS understands the importance of timely processing of tax returns and refund issuance. We have processed all error free returns received prior to October 2021 and continue to work the returns that need to be manually reviewed due to errors.  We are continuing to reroute tax returns and taxpayer correspondence from locations that are behind to locations where more staff is available, and we are taking other actions to minimize any delays. Tax returns are opened and processed in the order received. As the return is processed, whether it was filed electronically or on paper, it may be delayed because it has a mistake including errors concerning the Recovery Rebate Credit and the Child Tax Credit, is missing information, or there is suspected identity theft or fraud. If we can fix it without contacting you, we will. If we need more information or need you to verify that it was you who sent the tax return, we will write you a letter. The resolution of these issues could take 90 to 120 days depending on how quickly and accurately you respond, and the ability of IRS staff trained and working under social distancing requirements to complete the processing of your return.

What you should do: In most instances, no further action is needed but you may check Where’s My Refund? or you can view your account. If you filed electronically and received an acknowledgement, you do not need to take any further action other than promptly responding to any requests for information. If you filed on paper, check Where’s My Refund? If it tells you we have received your return or are processing or reviewing it, we are processing your return, but it may be under review. If you filed before October 2021 and Where’s My Refund? does not have any information, your return has been opened but work on it has not begun. We’re working hard to get through the carryover inventory. Please don’t file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.
