My wife and I both received Letter 6419 from the IRS, with instructions to report the Advance Child Tax Credit that we received in 2021. Where do we enter this info?

We believe that we are NOT eligible for the credit, so would need to repay the amount received, if that makes any difference.

Enter your Advance Child Tax Credit information from IRS Letter 6419 here:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click on Federal tab under Tax Home.
  3. Click on the Edit/Add button next to Advance payments, Child and Other Dependent Tax Credits (under Your tax  breaks).
  4. Answer the interview questions.

If you are not eligible for the payments (e.g., your income is too high), the program will let you know, and also what you may

need to pay back.

@Zack1982

You are the first to post this letter info ... may I ask.  Did both of you get the same  notice reporting the entire amount received ?   Or just 1/2 each ?

If it was the total on both letters were there instructions to NOT enter more than the total amount you actually got combined ?

We both got identical notices (other than our names). The instructions on the letter were to add the two amounts when reporting. TurboTax actually prompts for each spouse's amount, now that I know where to enter it!

Not an exact answer.

The Turbo Tax software has a space to enter what is showing on the IRS form that has my name, and a separate field for my wife, but I think I need to see how much money was paid out to me (via my bank acct) to find out the total of what was paid.

If I was paid 4000, for example, and my letter said 2,000, and my wife said the same, I need to enter both.  But if our letters said 4,000 on both, and we only got paid 4,000, I believe I only have to enter this value into one field in the software.

OK thanks. Yes mine’s  the same dilemma. Trying to be proactive but I don’t have my form(s) 6419 yet. I know ,via the portal ,what we received total,  just wondering if I should split that amount, One for the box with my name and one for the box with my spouse’s name.

thank you for the quick reply

Yes,  this question was answered by @TomK2023 earlier.  Here is a ink with more information on entering Advanced Child Tax Credit information.

If you received Advanced Child Tax Credit payments between Jul-Dec 2021 you will get an IRS letter 6419.  If you are married, your spouse will receive a letter as well. You must add/enter the amounts for both letters on a joint return to arrive at the proper amount of advanced child tax credit.

Here is the dilemma. July and August we received ONE payment jointly into our bank account. Then Sept-Dec they sent us separate payments which equaled the Total for the month. However in each of our child tax portal it shows the July and August payments under both of our accounts even though we received ONE deposit for this. So what’s gonna be on the letter and portal is $3000 more than we were actually paid. This will reduce our 2022 child tax money by $3000 which is incorrect. Please advise how we report and handle to not delay the refund.

Federal>Deductions and Credits>You and Your Family>Child Tax Credit

The IRS is sending out letter 6419 to you.  It will show the amount of advance child tax credit that you received during 2021.  Enter the information from that letter carefully.   The remaining amount of CTC that you can receive will show up on line 28 of your 2021 Form 1040.

PREVIEW 1040

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

NOTE:   The CTC is indeed a “credit” that can be applied toward any tax liability that you would otherwise have to pay as “tax due”  to the IRS.

Shows this

me July - $1500   Wife - $1500

me Aug $1500.     Wife - $1500

me Sept - $938.    Wife - $938

me Oct - $687.      Wife - $687

me Nov - $688.     Wife - $688

me Dec - $687.     Wife - $687

problem is we only received ONE $1500 payment in our bank acct for July/Aug. the next four payments were split from our bank acct and a check in mail made out to wife. The reporting amounts are $3000 more than we actually received. You understand what I’m saying???

@Zack1982. Regardless of the other advice you receive, here is how to report. Since you have received the 6419, you should report it and the program will determine if you were eligible or not.

  1. Log into Turbo Tax
  2. Go to federal>deductions and credits
  3. Go to You and your family
  4. Select Advance payments, Child and Other Dependent Tax Credits

This really is going to be a huge headache. Is Turbo tax going to get clarification if both letters are identical to the full amount the family received so far (example: payments totaled $2400 over six months and each individual letter says $2400, not $1200 how it should in theory) what we should enter for each parent filing jointly? It says to enter the amount on each letter for each person, but then we’re put in the position of saying we received $4800 in the example above on the joint tax return. Common sense would say to split it when entering it, but then you aren’t putting what is on the letter. If you write what’s on the letter you are misstating receiving twice as much and shorting yourself the full amount on the form. Please turbo tax look into this and get an official answer from the IRS before everyone messes this up one way or the other!!! The funniest part about this is they know what was already sent, it’s just a technicality that could cause a lot of unneeded adjusting later.

Generally, the answer is to enter the information as it appears on the letter.  However, if your numbers are definitely incorrect and are causing you to enter twice as much as  you actually received, you will need to call the number on the letter and speak with the IRS to fix it.  The number is 800-908-4184.

If you are sure it is incorrect, you should hold off on filing your tax return until you speak to them and get an updated corrected amount or a correct amount in the portal.

My wife & I never received the 6419 form. We are filing married jointly. We have 2 children. Age 2 & 3. We never received the advanced payments. So when we put 0 and it asks how many children qualify. But is also states for spouse & taxpayer. So would we both put 1 beside taxpayer & spouse? That way is equals 2? Whats the difference in taxpayer & spouse?  I am so confused.

If you got no advance payments then you just need to say NO on this screen then you will not see that other screen.

So my wife and I got our letters and they are for the correct amount. But when i enter the correct amounts into turbo tax and click thru the questions and say done. It takes me back to the summary of the tax breaks, and the amount is $1000 higher than i entered.

Don't look at the summary or the refund meter as both can be confusing ... look at the actual form 1040 line 28.

You can peek at only  the Federal form 1040 and the summary of the state info by going here:

1) lower- Left side of the screen...click to the left side of the "Tax Tools" text selection.
2)  then select "Tools"
3) then select "View Tax Summary" from the pop-up
4) then back to the left-side and "Preview 1040"

Then hit the "Back" on the left side to get back to your tax entries.

To view your entire return using the online editions (including the state) before you file, you will need to pay for your online account.

To pay the TurboTax online account fees by credit card, without completing the 2021 return at this time, click on Tax Tools >>> Tools  and then Print Center.  Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.  On the next page, to pay by credit card, click Continue.  On the next screen it will ask if you want Audit Defense, if you do not want this option just click on the Continue button.  The next screen will ask for all your credit card information so you can pay for the account.
