recovery rebate credit 2021

I don't understand how this happened, however I now owe the IRS $1400 + $309 in interest for underpaying taxes in 2021.

I entered $1400 in line 30 of tax return form 1040-SR. Today I can see that line 30 indicates tax money I "paid". I did not pay that tax money - it was money I received from the government.

Given this was 4 years ago I don't recall why I entered $1400 in line 30. I just follow the yellow brick road with Turbotax prompting.

Is here any recourse here other than sending a check to the IRS for $1709?

We certainly cannot see any of your tax returns or your information.  But one way you *could* have put $1400 on line 30 of your 2021 tax return incorrectly was if you already had received the $1400 stimulus check before you prepared your tax return, and then got confused and claimed on your return that you did not receive it.   You cannot get it twice, so if it was paid to you twice in error, the IRS wants it back.

Check your online account with the IRS to see what is shown for EIP payments that were sent to you.

    I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THE IRS/STATE

TurboTax does not receive any information from the IRS or your state after your return was filed, so no one at TurboTax knows about a letter you received from the IRS or the state.

I'm sure I did receive the $1400 before I filed my taxes. Evidently I misunderstood the Turbotax prompting in relation to that line item 30. I don't recall what the prompt was, or how I had the information on the total of $1400?

Regardless it appears to be a $1709 mistake that I must pay for.

It certainly inclines me to trust my tax filing to a local in-person tax professional rather than believing I can trust the process to Turbotax.

    Thanks 😢
