Question

I purchased turbotax at Costco, but I would like to file online. Can I use that purchase to credit my online account?

No. But you can efile from the Desktop program. Why don't you want to use the CD you bought? It has more features than the online version. You can not move a return from the Desktop program to the online version except to transfer into the next year.

Did you use online last year? You can transfer from last year into the Desktop program.

If you need more help Contact Customer Service when they are open. You only get a phone number during office hours M-F 5am-5pm Pacific time. https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/5566005

Note that while TT desktop will import SOME data from your online PDF file from last year, it will NOT import anything "complicated" like the description and details of a rental property nor the assets and depreciation associated with it.

If you used Turbo Tax last year you can transfer from the .tax2019 file.

One way is to start a 2020 Online return and transfer into that. Then you can download the .tax2020 file from online and just OPEN it in the Desktop program.

OR

If you used the online version last year and need to transfer your info to this year's Desktop version there are 2 ways depending on what you have.

1. If you saved the actual .tax2019 file (not just the pdf file) to your computer before online was shut down in Oct. then start a new return and the very first thing you do is Transfer from .tax file. You can only transfer at the very beginning.

2. If you didn't save the .tax file to your computer or lost it, there is a way to do it by starting a 2020 return in the Online version, transfer to that and then continue in the desktop version. You won't have to pay for Online.

First transfer into the Online version

Then to switch to the Desktop program

If you haven't opened the CD, you can return it to Costco.

You may be able to apply the purchase price to the online product. But only customer service can do that. The online product is more expensive and has fewer features, so while Turbotax loves it as a money maker, I personally don't think anyone should use the online program unless they qualify for free filing.

However if you insist on using the online program and Costco won't take a return, you can either send the CD into Turbotax for the 60 day money back guarantee and then file online separately, or call customer support and ask if they can apply the CD cost to the online program.

The Satisfaction Guaranteed policy and claim form are here.
