What if I entered my social security number wrong?

If you e-filed your return, it will be rejected.  One of the first checks of the e-file system is to compare the social security number with the exact name on record with the Social Security Administration.  Unless the incorrect number you used was an actual social security number and they have the same exact name, then the return will not go through.

TurboTax will send you an e-mail (and a text, if you opted for such) to notify you that the return was rejected.  You will then log back in and click on Fix.  Next, you will go to the Personal Info section and click Edit next to your name to correct your social security number.  You can then click File and re-submit your return for e-filing.

Assuming there are no other problems, it should be accepted once the proper social security number matching your name is submitted.

This happened to me just now.  I made the correction (twice) and it was accepted.  However, when I print out a copy of my taxes for my records, it still shows the wrong SS number.  Will Turbo Tax correct this so I can re-download my tax documents?

You can't fix it after you've already e-filed.  However, the IRS should reject your return (they definitely check to see if your SS#s are  correct).  Once rejected, simply log back into your return and make the correction (and refile).

If by some chance your return gets accepted, you will have to amend your return using Form 1040-X (not available until about mid-February).

Form 1040X can't be e-filed per IRS regulations.

After you finish amending in TurboTax, we'll guide you through printing and mailing your 1040X along with any required attachments.

Three weeks after mailing your amendment, you can start tracking it at Where's My Amended Return? on IRS.gov.

What if it happened on the 2018 tax and it wasn't caught by the IRS?

How do I fix it?

First, verify that you, in fact, have the wrong Social Security Number (SSN) on your tax return for 2018.

  • If you e-file your tax return online, you'll get a rejection error code almost immediately.
  • If you mail in your tax return, you'll generally get a letter in the mail from the IRS with your rejection code number. If you accidentally typed in the wrong SSN for your return, the error code you'll get is 0500, meaning your tax information doesn't match the data the IRS has on file from the Social Security Administration (SSA). To contact the SSA call 1 (800) 772-1213.

If your SSN is incorrect but you didn't get any letter from the IRS, contact the IRS to see what's going on with your 2018 tax return. You could also check your IRS transcript to see what they have as your SSN and related tax documents.

The IRS telephone number is 1-800-829-1040. Expect long wait times since it is tax season.
