Turbo tax continues to ask to enter an amount received as an advance payment on schedule 8812. I do not have any dependent children and have not received any payments. Hence I can't complete and eFile my return. How do I correct this?

I don't have any dependents, yet TT wants me to complete form 8812. I can't complete my e-filing with this form incomplete. Bummer!

Everyone is being asked this question since TurboTax does not know if the user was one who received these advances from the IRS in 2021.

Enter a 0 (zero) when asked to enter a number on the Schedule 8812. This will correct the issue and remove the Schedule 8812 from your tax return so that you can file the return.

My tax form submission will not advance because it keeps asking me for Advance Payments (Form 8812) which I do not know what it is and if it has anything to do with children  our kids are 52 and 48, ie no child credit is asked for or wanted. I just want to complete my filing and have a drink! Thanks for your help in resolving this stupid issue.

Entering 0 (zero) didn't help (it didn't for me), but I entered 0.0 and it did allowed me to continue. I hope this helps.

Entering zero on Schedule 8812 did not help most people. It did not fix my error. SO, on my disk version of TurboTax I went back the Forms and on my Information Worksheet, Part IV, Earned Income Credit Information checked the last box. In part, it reads ". . . or, if you are ineligible to claim the EIC for any other reason

I checked that box and Voila! 8812 simply disappeared from my return! No more error and no errant refundable credit that could have stimulated an audit!

I think TurboTax has a software question/answer glitch. AND, not everyone chooses to take EIC because they don't need it,.

So, I checked the last box on the Information Worksheet in the Forms mode of disk TT (Part IV, Earned Income Credit Information . In part, it reads ". . . or, if you are ineligible to claim the EIC for any other reason.) After running a final error check, Schedule 8812 did come back, and THEN entering zero as first directed cleared the original error.

In my case, both work for me (no review error):

1, Enter 0 at the "advance payment" field, OR

    2. Delete the From 8812 altogether.

Since both work for me, what is the preferred way to handle this? Or, it doesn't really matter as long as it works?

I didn’t receive any child tax credit

Are you able to view the computation that the software made for the Child Tax Credit?

Report the total amount of Advance Child Tax Credit payments that were disbursed to you during 2021.  You may have received a Letter 6419 from the IRS.  You and your spouse may have each received your own letter with the total you each received.

The amount of Advance Child Tax Credit payments will be entered at the screen Tell us about any Advance Child Tax Credits.

If you can view the entire 2021 1040 Federal tax return at Tax Tools / Print Center, you will see:

    • Line 12 of Federal Schedule 8812 which computes the total Child Tax Credit, and
    • Line 28 of the Federal 1040 which reports the refundable amount.

The full amount of the Child Tax Credit is not reported on the 2021 1040 Federal tax return, only the net amount after applying the advance payments.

To view Federal 1040 line 28, go to Tax Tools / Tools / View Tax Summary / Preview my 1040.

Enter a 0 (zero) when asked to enter a number on the Schedule 8812. This will correct the issue and remove the Schedule 8812 from your tax return so that you can file the return.

Since you do not have dependents and did not receive any advance child tax credits in 2021, the Schedule 8812 will not be included in the 2021 tax return that is filed.
