Why Students Don’t Qualify for the American Opportunity Credit

2018 was my 4th year of undergrad work.  I am not being claimed as a dependent by anyone else in 2018 and am filing single.  My parents claimed the credit for 3 previous years.  I am between 18-24 yrs old.  I manually downloaded form 8863 from irs.gov and completed it.  It shows that I should be moving $1000 to my 1040, line 17c.  I cannot determine where in Turbotax there is the information that is causing turbotax to decide I am not qualified.  Please help.

Why aren't your parents claiming you?

Why Students Don’t Qualify for the American Opportunity Credit

The most likely reason you do not qualify for the American Opportunity Tax Credit is because you are between 18-24 and do not have a tax shown on line 11 of your 1040.   In order to be eligible for the refundable portion of the tax credit that would be shown on line 17c, you would have to be over 24. You are only eligible for the non-refundable portion if you are under 24.

"If you were under age 24 at the end of 2018 and the conditions listed below apply to you, you cannot claim any part of the American opportunity credit as a refundable credit on your tax return. Instead, you can claim your allowed credit, figured in Part II, only as a nonrefundable credit to reduce your tax.

You don't qualify for a refundable American opportunity credit if 1 (a, b, or c), 2, and 3 below apply to you.

1.You were: a.Under age 18 at the end of 2018, or b.Age 18 at the end of 2018 and your earned income (defined later) was less than one-half of your support (defined later), or c.Over age 18 and under age 24 at the end of 2018 and a full-time student (defined later) and your earned income (defined later) was less than one-half of your support (defined later).
2.At least one of your parents was alive at the end of 2018.
3.You're not filing a joint return for 2018." https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i8863
