Where do I find Form 8863, Without using the 1098-T?

The 1098-T is the main document used to report qualified expenses. You can prepare a Form 8863 with TurboTax even if you did not receive a 1098-T.

TurboTax will generate the form based on your answers in the "Education" interview section, allowing you to manually enter tuition and expenses.

  1. To enter or correct a Form 1098-T, you can follow these steps
    1. Select Tax Tools from the left sidebar.
    2. On the drop-down select Tools
    3. There will be 2 green boxes
    4. Select Topics Search
    5. Type  1098-T
    6. Continue through the interview or post your corrections
  2. When asked, "Did you receive a 1098-T?", Answer No.
  3. You may be asked if you qualify for an exception (e.g., the school was not required to send one, or you didn't receive it).
  4. Follow the interview to enter your educational expenses based on your own records.
  5. Report any scholarships or grants received.

Where do I find Form 8863, Without using the 1098-T?

Do you mean how to you claim a tuition credit (fill out form 8863) without using a 1098-T?

If you were issued a 1098-T, you DO want to use it to claim the tuition credit.  Otherwise, you enter your information in the same place as people that do have a 1098-T. When asked if you got one, answer no. On the next screen say yes to qualifying for an exception.

In TurboTax (TT), enter at:

Federal Taxes Tab (Personal for H&B version)

Where do I find Form 8863, Without using the 1098-T?

Thank you for the replies. The issue is that the 1098-T on turbo tax requires an EIN due to the AOC, however, if you are attempting to do the LLC and you are attending an eligible foreign university that does not give a 1098-T and does not have an EIN, then you would not be able to proceed due to the input validation on the turbo tax form that fills out the 1098-T. However, the IRS allows you the LLC without a University EIN, (assuming it is eligible) using the Form 8863, per the 8863 instruction sheet. Unfortunately, turbo tax does not allow you to complete a 8863 without first doing the 1098-T with a "Valid" EIN which creates the issue. I've reported the issue to the techies, so hopefully it gets fixed.
