Tuition Reimbursement

I I was hoping someone can help me. I tried calling the IRS and they were no help. I received approx 9,500 in tuition reimbursement in 2018 and 2019. I left the job so I have to pay the tuition back. Since I am paying it back this year do I do an amended return next year for 2019 or do I take the education credit next year? Also, what is the max I can deduct each year?

Tuition Reimbursement

Each year, the first $5,250 of tuition paid by your employer is tax free, i.e. you did not pay tax on that amount. Therefore you cannot claim a tax deduction or credit when you repay them.

However, if you have to repay in 2020 the tuition paid by your employer in 2018 and 2019, you can amend your 2018 and 2019 tax returns to claim these education expenses as they have now become "out-of-pocket".

I can’t thank you enough for your help as this is new for me! So next year are you saying I would take the education credit from the repayment of tuition or I would actually amend my 2018 and 2019 taxes and take the education credit at that time. Is it hard to file an amended return? I usually just use turbo tax? Thanks again!!!
