Will my son have taxable income if his tuition and fees exceed his scholarships? Turbotax says yes.

My son's tuition and fees came to 15787 (did not include room and board), and his scholarships came to 15335.  Turbotax says his scholarships are considered income.  Can you please explain?

Scholarships, fellowships, and Pell grants received by registered students who are working towards a degree at a college, university, or other accredited educational institution are generally nontaxable as long as the money is used for qualified education expenses.

On the flip side, you can't claim education credits or deduct expenses that were paid with these tax-free funds

Scholarships or portions of scholarships may be taxable. It all depends on how you use them.

Box 5 has your scholarship or grant amount.  According to numbers above, you should be taxed on it as income unless the information on your 1098-T is incorrect or entered into TurboTax wrong..  Sometimes it shows as income until you finish entering the expenses and then the software realizes there is no excess to tax.

If you use your scholarship to pay for any of these, it counts as income and the amount paid is taxable:

  • Room and board
  • Travel
  • Any fees, books, and supplies or equipment that are not required for your courses

If you’re getting a degree at an eligible school, your scholarship is tax-free when used for:

  • Tuition and fees
  • Fees, books, supplies or equipment required for your courses
  • Any scholarship or fellowship for services received under the National Health Services Corps Scholarship Program or the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship and Financial Assistance Program

For example, if you used your scholarship to pay for tuition and room and board, you would be taxed on the room and board payment but not tuition.

I am working without a 1098-T.  I only have his Term Fee Bill for Spring and Fall because UConn isn't required to produce the 1098-T.  I still don't understand why it is taxable income since scholarships, etc. are $452 than tuition and fees?  Could you explain further?  Thank you for your assistance.

Where are you entering the scholarships?

It should not be taxable so we need to figure out why the software thinks it is.

Deductions and credits, tuition and fees, scholarships and financial aid.

Have you entered your expenses yet?  Usually when you enter the expenses, it will net it all out.  Since you have no 1098-T, you can just enter what you actually paid over and above the scholarships under expenses OR you can mark that you got a 1098-T (you will need the EIN for UCONN) and put the scholarships in box 5 and then add expenses.

So I can enter $452 ( the difference) under "books and materials required to be purchased from the school"?

(I just tried that btw and it still counts as income.)

yes.  The 1098-T is just a tool to help you figure out what out of pocket expenses you paid.  When you do not get one, it can be very confusing but if you know what your out of pocket expenses are, you just enter that.

Ok.  Something is wrong then.  I am a tax attorney and not an IT person.  You can delete that and start over or, you can wait for me to ask and get back to you; or enter an IT type question in the Answer Exchange that will route you to tax support person.  Try "why does my child's scholarship show as income if I entered it properly" or "how can I enter the scholarships where they will not show up as income."

I was told you need to delete the current education expenses and start over.  "In TurboTax, you'll simply tell the program that "yes" you incurred educational expenses, but that "no" you don't have a 1098-T.  You'll then be presented with the opportunity to input the dollar amounts of your educational expenses.
