My 1098T box 5 indicates it exceeds box 1 by $8365.  So I think that excess should be the taxable amount., but the final result of income tax return is it shows that the taxable amount is box 1.  What am I doing wrong.

It is hard to say. You can try to delete the form and re-enter, being careful with each answer.

To Delete a Form

Open your return in TurboTax. 

• In the left side bar, select Tax Tools> Tools.
• In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form.
• Select Delete next to the form/schedule/worksheet and follow the onscreen instructions

alternatively, zero out Box 1 and put the $8365 in Box 5.... you should see that same amount appear on line 1 (wages) of form 1040 with the word "SCH" typed in by TT on that line
