1098-t carryover and personal tuition payments

University just explained that in my sons final year there is a carryover on the 1098-t due to the billing in Nov 21 for the scholarships and grants. He pointed out there was also an imbalance the 1st year in 2018 since you start in the fall. This now leaves an imbalance that he has to claim as income.

Can he now deduct the personal payments for tuition that were made in 2022, that were not included on the 1098-t of 2022?

Are personal payments that you make towards tuition standard as being included on the 1098-t ?

Thanks for the Help

The 1098-T is only an informational document. The numbers on it are not required to be entered onto your tax return. However receipt of a 1098-T frequently means you are either eligible for a tuition credit or possibly your student has taxable scholarship income.

If you claim the tuition credit, you do need to report that you got one or that you qualify for an exception (the TurboTax interview will handle this)

You claim the tuition credit, or report scholarship income, based on your own financial records, not the 1098-T. In the 1098-T screen, click on the link "What if this is not what I paid the school" underneath box 1. You will then be able to enter the actual amounts paid. You will also reach a screen that allows you to adjust the scholarship amount for "amounts not awarded for 2022 expenses".

Or if you find it easier, just change the numbers in boxes 1& 5 to what your records show. The 1098-T that you enter in TT is not sent to the IRS.

Thanks for the reply, I will try your directions because he has to report as income. In the past we had received some of the tuition credits but not this year.

Are you saying that any money that I did pay personally towards tuition I could have written off---even if we did receive a tuition credit?

thanks again

Q. Are you saying that any money that I did pay personally towards tuition I could have written off---even if we did receive a tuition credit?

A. No. The tuition credit is the only way to "Write off" educational expenses.
