Can I deduct professional development courses that I paid for out of pocket?
Best answer by

According to the IRS, for it to be deductible, your expenses must be for education that

1. maintains or improves your job

2. is required by your employer or law to keep your salary, status, or job.

You will only be able to deduct your continuing education as Job-Related Expense.

In TurboTax, please do the following:

  • Federal Taxes
  • Deductions & Credits
  • Employment Expenses, click Show more
  • Job Expenses for W-2 Income, click Start
  • Follow a couple of prompts until you see the Job-Related Expenses page, type in your description
