My sons 1098-T (tuition) for 2024 is not accepted by TT like in prior years. With all other variables relatively static, I am puzzled. Did the tax laws change?

Prior years I was prompted to input 1098-T values but this year I am told I cant claim the educational tax break. No explanation provided.

Based on the latest information, there haven't been significant changes to the tax laws regarding education credits for 2024

However, there are a few factors that might affect your ability to claim the educational tax break this year:

  • Income Limits: Both the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) and the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC) have income limits. If your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) exceeds $90,000 ($180,000 for joint filers), you won't be eligible for these credits
  • Click on Eligibility Requirements to ensure that your son meets all the criteria for the AOTC or LLC. For example, the AOTC is only available for the first four years of post-secondary education.

If you believe you qualify, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to TurboTax, be sure you are logged in for the link in Step 2 to work:
  2. Navigate to Form 1098-T:
    • TurboTax Online/Mobile: Click 1098-Tps to enter the 1098-T:
