my son is in college full time how can I claim the American opportunity tax credit

To claim the American Opportunity Tax Credit, your son would have to meet the following criteria:

 

  • has not completed the first four years of post-secondary education
  • enrolls in at least one academic semester during the tax year
  • be enrolled at least part time
  • cannot have a state or federal drug conviction

To enter in TurboTax, follow these steps:

 

  1. Sign in to TurboTax
  2. Click Search and enter American Opportunity Credit
  3. Click the jump to link
  4. Answer Interview Questions

my son is in college full time how can I claim the American opportunity tax credit

Your son must be your dependent in order for you to claim the American opportunity tax credit (AOTC).  Be advised there is an income limit for you ($90K, $180K married). 

 

In TurboTax (TT), enter at:

Federal Taxes Tab (Personal for H&B version)

Deductions & Credits

-Scroll down to:

--Education

  --Education Expenses and Scholarships (1098-T)
