Did he have actual tuition expenses?  If you actually paid the tuition amounts for 2018 in 2018, then they should be included in box 1 and, if they aren't you can include the amounts actually paid.  It's not uncommon for schools to make mistakes with these forms (though you might want to check with the school to see if there is a reason why $0 was produced).

You can still enter this information into the program using the educational expenses section.

Follow these directions below -
  • Log into your account and click Take Me to My Return (you must click this before performing the search below)
  • Click the search icon (magnifying glass in top right-hand corner)
  • Search for "1098T" and click the "jump to 1098T" link that appears
  • This will bring you to the Education Expenses section where you can add a student and related Form 1098-T information
  • There will be a blue link underneath box 2 that details what if this is not the correct amount - click that link and a new box will open for you to input the correct amount of tuition paid.
  • Be sure to also include the other information from your Form 1098 such as scholarships and grants
  • You can then proceed with the rest of the interview
Note:  You will want to make sure that you have some sort of records or proof that you actually paid these amounts when entering your educational expenses this way - something such as canceled checks, a record of your account with the school showing dates paid, or credit card statements, etc.
