MN Student Loan Credit

Minnesota residents who make payments on their own postsecondary education loans may qualify for a nonrefundable credit.

To qualify, both of these must be true:

  • You are a full-year or part-year Minnesota resident.
  • You make payments on your own qualifying education loans during the tax year. For married couples, each spouse must have made payments on their own qualified loans.

Both of these are true for me, yet Turbo tax is saying "Based on your entries, you're not qualified for the Minnesota Student Loan credit for 2025".

I don't believe this is accurate? How do I fix this?

Importantly, Minnesota also uses your income to calculate the credit. If your income is high relative to your eligible loan payments, or you have no taxable earned income, the calculated credit can be reduced to zero.

Could this be the issue? You can read more about the 2025 Schedule M1SLC here.
