If a full time college student receives a W-2 for $1000 and a 1099-MISC for $845, does she still have to file CA state and fed returns? Can she use the 1040EZ?

Does the 1099 MISC prevent her from using the 1040EZ? It just seems like overkill to use a 1040, schedC and I haven't even looked at what  CA tax forms need to be filed. Just want to keep it simple. She paid $40 total in taxes, and one online app said she owed another $81. It seems she should be getting the $40 returned.

No, unfortunately, she will indeed owe self-employment tax on the 1099 income and that requires the Self employment version.


There is another  free version that may meet her needs and would include the Schedule C  See here:

No, unfortunately, she will indeed owe self-employment tax on the 1099 income and that requires the Self employment version.
