To claim the Lifetime learning Credit you must :

  • Be enrolled or taking courses at an eligible educational institution.
  • Be taking higher education course or courses to get a degree or other recognized education credential or to get or improve job skills.
  • Be enrolled for at least one academic period* beginning in the tax year.
  • You can’t claim the credit if your Modified Adjusted Gross Income ( MAGI) is $68,000 or more ($136,000 or more if you file a joint return). The Credit will be reduced if your MAGI is between $58,000 and $68,000 ($116,000 and $136,000 if you file a joint return).

To claim the credit in TurboTax:

  1. Log in to your account.
  2. Go to Federal Taxes.
  3. Go to Deductions and Credits.
  4. Scroll down and click Start next to Expenses and scholarships.
  5. Answer Yes to "Do you want to enter your higher education expenses?".
