Education tax credit

I'm not eligible to claim my son's 1098-T because he isn't a dependent this year. (I'm thinking this is the reason). Can he claim it on his? if so, he has already filed, so can he update this info and re-file?

Yes, he can claim the 1098-T on his tax return. However, he must meet the requirements in order to do so.

The child must not be considered a dependent on someone's tax return.

Was the child:

  • full time student
  • under the age of 24
  • did not provide more than half of his or her own support

Was the school must be considered an eligible educational institution:

There are other requirements as well, the easiest way to see if you qualify, is to visit the IRS link below and use the interactive tool.

If he does qualify, he will need to amend his 2016 return, as soon as it has been finalized. When that time comes, he can follow the Turbo Tax FAQ below in order to amend.

Afterwards, he can check on the status of his amended tax return at the IRS link below.

Education tax credit

Well I just tried to amend and added the 1098-T info and it says he isn't eligible. I don't understand why he isn't eligible and I'm not either
