Claiming student books and out of pocket medical expenses

Yes, you can claim educational expenses (including books) paid in 2016 for classes in the first quarter of 2017.

To enter educational expenses (and financial aid):

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Deductions and Credits
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Education
  • On Expenses and Scholarships (Form 1098-T), click the start or update button
Be sure to claim all of your Qualified Education Expenses
And here is the steps to claim your medical expenses.

You should only include medical expenses for which you paid in 2016 (out of pocket, credit card etc.)
