Can you get indiana renters credit for an apartment a student rented while at college.

It depends, but, unfortunately, you are probably not allowed to claim the deduction.  The only way you would be able to claim it is if it is your permanent home (being away for college is a temporary absence), and the rent must be paid on taxable property (a college dorm does not count although a private apartment would).  You are not directly disqualified because you are being claimed as a dependent, but it would be unlikely that you could be claimed as a dependent if you are not living at your parents home.

Here is an Indiana website that discusses their deductions.  Click on the following link:  http://www.in.gov/dor/4735.htm#renter and you will see all of the requirements for Indiana's renter's deduction
