Can I deduct rent for a student living at college?

No, Rent  ( housing, or room & board)   is not a qualified education expense so you cannot claim it under education credits.

However, depending on the state you live in, you may be eligible for a renters credit/deduction which you will be able to enter when you file your state return. When you file your state return, it will ask you for your rent info, if your state provides any deduction or credit for it.

Room and board, on or off campus, is not qualified expense for an education credit.

If you have  a 529 plan, R&B is a qualified expense for a withdrawal from that plan, if the student is half time or more.
