We are a small buisness, can business items that were used personally be deducted as apart of marketing?

We are set up to sell nutrition supplements, are those supplements consumed personally considered deductible as possible advertising or marketing?

No, anything you withdraw from the business and consume or use for personal purposes cannot be deducted as marketing.

If you take products to trade shows for "give-aways" or provide samples for marketing, then those items can be considered marketing expense.  Keep in mind that these could be part of your product for resale.

When you complete the cost of goods section of the business you should remove your cost of goods that were consumed or used for personal purposes.

To accurately reflect your products for resale you can use the steps below.

  1. Sign into your TurboTax account (online or desktop versions)
  2. Select the Business tab
  3. Continue > I'll choose what I work on
  4. Business Income and Expense
  5. Edit > Inventory (see image attached)
