What do I file under if I’m not a business owner only worked for a business owner being paid cash?

If you worked for someone else who paid you in cash and did not issue you a W-2, then you were being treated as an independent contractor.  This means that you are self-employed and considered to own your own business offering your services to others.  

 

You will use your own records to determine how much income to report.  Your income and any associated expenses will be reported on Schedule C Business Income and Expenses.  You will also be subject to self-employment tax if your net income is over $400.
