HII,
I am in an RDP in california and per Turbo Tax instructions, and using TT desktop software prepared a mock federal return and California state return - based on 'married filing jointly - including all of the income and deduction info from both domestic partners. (I also prepared individual federal returns for me and my partner, based upon the community property/income rules.]
I am ready to e-file the California return, but TT is giving a message saying i can't file it until i file the federal return has been filed. But the two, individual federal returns are separate from the mock federal return used to prepare the state return.
So do i first e-file each of our individual RDP federal forms, then only the joint state form using the 'mock' federal return i prepared?

Unfortunately, you cannot e-file the joint California tax return. You must mail it. Regulations require that TurboTax can only e-file the state return if the federal return is e-filed.
