Have been entering the information incorrectly as Business Income Schedule C because I cannot enter Wages/Earnings on line 1 of the 1040 since I have no EIN for my office

I work for a U.N. related office in NYC (Permanent Mission of Japan) and do no have taxes removed so I have to declare income (wages) and pay quarterly estimated taxes every year. I live in NYC year round and am paid from Tokyo in USD. I receive a letter from my office summing up my annual income - no W-2 or 1099 etc. I have been entering the information incorrectly as Business Income Schedule C because I cannot enter Wages/Earnings on line 1 of the 1040 since I have to EIN for my office/place of employment. I usually file every year with Turbotax deluxe married filing jointly and I end up having to pay for Federal and State along with the estimated quarterly tax payments through out the year. My wife should receive a refund of her taxes in 2024 but somehow Turbotax Deluxe does not work that out for us filing married-jointly. I paid $60 to talk on the phone with a turbotax 'live tax advisor' who didn't even have the turbotax deluxe software running so could not initially help me walk through the forms/software on the phone. My case bamboozled the expert as well and did not have much advice to except to confirm I was already had entered my information in the right locations - apparently. I really need advice about using the Turbotax software and working on Self Employment (SE) Tax. The UN itself has this basic advice for IRS filing: https://tax.un.org/news/2024-tax-filing-tips

I don't know if you should be paying the SE tax, see the SE link in the article you provided.

We can't get your income to line 1 but we can make it taxable income without it being a business. We can also calculate the SE tax, if needed. Follow these steps:

  1. go to the federal income section
  2. scroll to the bottom
  3. Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C, Start
  4. Scroll to the bottom
  5. Other reportable income, start
  6. Select Other income not already reported on W2 or Form 1099, start
  7. Other wages received, select yes, continue
  8. Household, continue
  9. Sick pay, continue
  10. Medicaid, continue
  11. Any other earned income? Select yes, continue
  12. Select Employee compensation, continue
  13. Continue, Income for... select yourself, continue
  14. Report wage income, select I don't know ID number, select a code. If you have filed the SS-8, select the correct answer. If you haven't, select G.
  15.  Your choice yes or no.

You will see your wages on line 1g along with SE tax on line 23.

Thank you AmyC!

I also found this thread on the subject:

I can enter my income as Other but I am not sure if TurboTax Deluxe will calculate my quarterly estimated taxes this way.

TurboTax calculates your quarterly estimates based on your annual tax liability.  Adding your income in this way will increase the amount you owe which will tell TurboTax how to estimate what you will owe next year.  Your estimates should be fine.
