It didn't work..  the " Z" appears as an error... I open the form, and the slot to add the $ is locked unless I would over ride it.

I am working on a personal TT 1040 with the Z showing up as an error and the quick zoom brings me to the page and the slots are blocked.

At this point you may wish to contact a specialist that can work through that section of the return with you. The specialists can look at your return on their screen to find out exactly what is causing this issue and suggest how you can take corrective action if needed.

I followed your instructions but chose "ordinary business income (loss)" and see that my federal refund increased immediately.  Is my assumption that the amount I inserted originally in Line 20Z was not used in the calculation of federal taxes due to the "bug"?

if you inserted an amount in 20Z that is meant to be blank, this calculation will not record to your return. It is the entry that you make in the followup screens, especially stating that your investment is at risk that calculates the QBI plus the information that you recorded as ordinary business income in the screen that followed.

The update April 1, 2020 took care of my problem, I will be able to file electronically now.  Thanks

The update fixed my problem, also.

@DaveF1006 Hi Dave, as of 4-19-2020 selecting code Z still generates an error and clicking on "QuickZoom to enter Code Z Section 199A information" leads to "Statement A" where I see the amount yet TT still shows an error? What am I not entering on "Statement A" so that it triggers the error?

And here's where the QuickZoom leads to which is "Statement A" but what do I miss here? Is there another place to enter Section 199A  gain/loss?

Hi Boyban and Dave,

After using turbo tax since around 1988? +/-   I never encountered an glitch like this one.  Yes, I have spent hours with minor issues over the years.  This time it was a known glitch of TT.   In attempting several calls to TT my last representative asked me if I want to keep working on this issue which meant wating, or take a refund.

I took the refund.

No more K-1 forms after this year..  All those will be gone.

@krnba Hi thanks for the reply -- by "refund" you mean get your money back for the software or you meant tax refund? If it's refund for the buggy software that's cool but how does it solve the tax problem? I mean we still have to file taxes and TT offering a refund doesn't solve that issue 🙂 I don't want to start shopping for a CPA just now when we're so late in the game...

Sorry for reviving this old post - I think I have the same error and I can't efile due to "Box 20 Code Z has been selected but no Section 199A income has been entered on Statement A". I'm using TT Premier Windows version.

Basically smart check complains about no 199a income has been entered even if I entered all the information; I tried step by step and using the form method, I also tried entering a random amount for the Line 20 code Z, but I can't pass the screen.

I wonder if anyone has found a workaround for this issue?

Thanks,

Yiming

This issue has been talked about already for a few months, and the taxes MUST BE FILED BY 7/15. Why hasn't INTUIT/TURBO TAX fixed this issue yet? If you cannot get past the error check or file electronically this is worthless. I have been using Turbo Tax for about 20 years and always figured out how to get past small bugs, but  NOTHING seems to work with this one. HELP! Someone at TT/Intuit needs to let us know on Monday 7/13 how we can get past this issue so that it will clear the error check, and also file electronically.

Here's how to fix your "no Section 199A income has been entered" issue:

Enter your code Z on the "box 20 screen".  You don't need to enter an amount on that box 20 screen, but you do need to click Continue after you have entered the code Z.   (It doesn't "hurt anything" to have an amount entered on on that box 20 screen, but anything entered there doesn't get used in any calculation.)

The next screen is "Describe the Partnership" and the next screen is "We see you have Section 199A income" and then you should get "We need some information about your 199A income", followed by "Let's check for some uncommon adjustments".   When you get those last two screens, you check the box on any line that correlates with the amounts that are on the Section 199A Statement/STMT that came with your K-1.  When you check the box on the line(s) you need, other boxes will "open up" to enter the amounts from your Section 199A Statement/STMT (sometimes called a Statement A).

Note that Unadjusted Basis of Assets amount goes on the "....has UBIA of qualified property" line.

To get back to the K-1 summary screen and find the Schedule K-1 to edit, click the "magnifying glass Search" icon on the top row, enter "k-1" in the search window and press return or enter, and then click on the "Jump to k-1" link to find the K-1 you need to edit.

Here are screenshots of the "We need some information about your 199A income or loss" and "Let's check for some uncommon adjustments" screens where you enter the information from your K-1 Section 199A Statement/STMT:

Thank you, this helped resolve!!

Entering Section 199A Information, Box 20, Code Z

That did it for me.  The only thing that might clear it up a tiny bit more is:

(I'm on Turbo Tax Premier Mac Download, so not sure about differences between online and Mac/PC)

Follow Dave's steps.  When you get to #4

1.  Tick the box that says XXXX has BUSINESS income loss

2.  There you can enter the Rental income (loss)

That fixed my problem.  I feel like I did the same thing over and over about 50 times in hoping that it would fix itself.  I never ticked the business income loss box because on my STMT there was rental income (loss) but no business income (loss).
