I'm trying to help my daughters boyfriend do his taxes. His parents are claiming him on their taxes and have already filed. He was given a 1099 NEC form for a summer job mowing yards. This form is trying to force him to file as a business owner, which he is not. He is a college student and this is going to take 24% of his income. This is insane. My daughter made far more money and got all of her taxes refunded. Is there any way to avoid this? This is really unfair to college kids.

Sorry---that is the reality of self-employment income. He worked as an independent contractor so no tax, Social Security or Medicare was withheld from his pay. Now he has to pay all of that. If you do not want to use the expensive TurboTax Self-Employed you could explore the free software on the IRS site.
