1099-G for agriculture, taxable grant, box 6

Hi, I've followed the instructions on entering the box 6, taxable grant, information under the other income under the schedule F, but when the program runs the federal check it gives the error, "taxable agricultural payments must have a less than or equal to zero." message.  If I move it to the agricultural payments box (which isn't how it is named or numbered on the 1099-G received) it increases the refund.  Do I just print it off and send it in since it won't let me e-file with it entered as is?

It sounds like the program is not happy with Box 7 being left blank.

I suggest you enter zero in Box 7.

Is the amount in Box 6 flowing to the tax return Schedule F?

Thank you for your response.  Adding a zero in box 7 did not change the outcome.  It is not linking to Schedule F - I realized as it currently is entered it's under other common income.  The option for a 1099-G under Farm income does not have an option for box 6.

According to the instructions for Form 1099-G, box 6, since the grant relates to an activity for which you are required to file Schedule F, do not enter the amount on the 1099-G entry form. Instead, report the taxable amount as income on the applicable Schedule F.

You can enter this income using these steps:

  1. Open your return and go to Wage & Income.
  2. Click Update next to Farm Income and Expenses.
  3. On the Farm Summary, click Edit next to your farm name.
  4. Continue through the interview pages until you come to "Any Other Income or Credits?." Do not enter anything under "Form 1099-G Summary" or "Agricultural Program Payments."
  5. Enter the amount in Form 1099-G, box 6 on the screen, Any Other Income or Credits? This avoids the form error this income.
  6. Continue to the end of the section.

If you entered Form 1099-G in another area of your return, go there and delete the 1099-G entry.
