I filed my 2020 tax return with Turbo Tax and made the required payment 1,289.00. Then I received a notification from IRS that I owed additional $1,211.59. This issue occurred last year. How can there be such a big discrepancy with the Turbo Tax product?

What did the demand letter from the IRS say?
Could you have made a data entry error, or forgotten to claim some income? Since the difference is exactly $2500, the IRS might have disallowed some credit, such as the American Opportunity Tax Credit.
Sorry @SweetieJean the difference is not 2,500 it is $1,211.59
Sorry...I misread the $1289 as a refund. ($1289 + 1211 = $2500)
@hoanth01 - what is on Line 30 of your 2020 tax return? did you claim the 1st stimulus payment and the IRS beleives you already received it (thus denied it and the remaining $11.89 is interest for late payment???)
could also refer to 2nd stimulus payment as that was $600 per eligible person on your tax return,. \\
It sounds like they denied the first $1200 stimulus credit or 2 separate $600 payments ( if you are married) plus interest ... so what did the IRS letter say they changed on your return ? Have you gotten an IRS notice yet ?
