Will I get a refund if I have negative net income

Yes, you may receive a refund of all taxes that you paid during the tax year if you had a negative AGI (Adjusted Gross Income). This is called a Net Operating Loss (NOL).

Generally, when there is a NOL at the end of the year, you must carryback the NOL to the two tax years before the NOL year ('carryback period'). Then, if there is any leftover NOL after the carryback period, you carryforward the balance for up to 20 years after the NOL year ('carryforward period'). You can't deduct any part of the NOL after the carryforward period.

You can elect to waive the two-year carryback period and use the NOL for the carryforward period only. This may be advantageous if the taxable income in the past two years was low or if they expect to have a lot of taxable income after the NOL year. TurboTax will ask you about this if your return shows an NOL for the year.

You can read more about NOL carryovers in TurboTax after you open your return by using the Search/Find function (at the top right corner of the header) for "NOL" and clicking on the "jump to nol" link. The blue "Learn More" link on the NOL page provides extensive information on calculating NOL carryovers and how they may be used in TurboTax.
