Wife doesn't have SSN

Hi there,

My wife and children don't have SSNs. Based on some research, the recommendation was to add bogus SSNs to bypass the system and file for ITIN or SSN. However, it seems I should have done the filing by mail. Now that I have submitted an e-file, how can make sure to convey this information to IRS? Should I apply for ITIN and mail IRS?

Thanks,

Mohamad

You should not be able to e-file without tax numbers for your spouse and dependents, or using fake numbers.  What exactly did you e-file?  Single?  Married filing separately?  With or without dependents and spouse?

Are your children and spouse eligible for SSNs?

If you tried to efile with fake numbers expect the return to be rejected ... then you can mail in the return instead with the W-7 form if you are applying for the ITINs now.
