Why would the phrase "Not valid for employment" be on my son's SS card?

My son is a young child. I don't have the card and would like to finish the form instead of going to SS office for another card.

Why would the phrase "Not valid for employment" be on my son's SS card?

The SSA issues it to people from other countries who:

  • are lawfully admitted to the United States without work authorization from DHS, but have a valid non-work reason for needing a Social Security number; or
  • need a number because of a federal law requiring a Social Security number to get a benefit or service.

People who are not a U.S. Citizen or lawful permanent resident, may have a work restriction listed on their card.

We do tax questions; yours is a SS question; please ask SS.

I'm running into this while trying to file taxes, hence I'm asking here.

I'm being asked: "Are the words "Not valid for employment" on the dependent's social security card?"

* Unfortunately, I don't have the SS card (my ex does), so I don't for certain. If I can know why that phrase would be on the card, or not, I can make a solid guess about whether or not the phrase will be on my dependent's card.
