Why haven’t I heard anything about my refund?

Filed on 3/29/2024 and tax refund was mailed to IRS. I’m checking where’s my refund but nothing is coming back. Is this normal?

Did you use a mailing service like certified mail to track your mailed return and give you confirmation that it was received by the IRS?   It usually takes about four weeks for a human to open the envelope and enter the return into the system, and after that you can see information on the IRS refund site.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2023 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

To change to e-filing:

If you are not seeing anything by now, maybe you sent it to the wrong address or it got lost.   If that happened, you will need to switch to e-file, or print and mail it again.  If you mail it again, use a service to track it.
