Why does 1040-V ask me to mail my return again?

Turbotax said I filed my federal taxes and that the IRS accepted them

It gave me a 1040-V to mail for the amount owed, as I selected "pay by check"

The 1040-V asks to attach the return again.  This seems redundant and perhaps confusing to the IRS.  Can I mail the 1040-V and a check, and nothing else for payment?   Do I need to attach the return again?   I might just pay the IRS directly online if I can afford it because the check stuff is confusing.

Any thought?  Thanks 🙂

If you e-filed your federal tax return and it was accepted then you do not have to mail in the Form 1040.  You just need to mail the 1040V with your check or money order and make sure your Social Security number is on the form and on the check.     Use a mailing service that will track it so you will have assurance that the IRS received it, since it could take awhile before they cash the check.

And of course if you want to pay on the IRS site you can do that instead of mailing a check.
