The IRS estimates 9 out of 10 to receive their refund within 21 calendar days. This is calculated from the date the E-File is successfully submitted to the IRS so the soonest that refunds will likely go out is around February 19 (since the IRS officially opened January 29 this season).

However, by law, the IRS cannot issue refunds claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) until approximately Feb. 27, 2018 -- if you chose direct deposit and there are no other issues with the tax return.

To track your Federal refund, visit the Where’s My Federal Refund? site here: https://www.irs.gov/refunds

You can begin checking at least 24 hours after e-filing or 4 weeks after mailing. Updates are made daily, usually overnight.

  • You may also download the IRS2Go app to check your Federal refund status.

According to the IRS, your refund could hit your account 1-5 days after it is sent by the Internal Revenue Service because banks vary in how and when they credit funds.
