When can I amend my 2020 return?

I just filed my 2020 return on Saturday 2/27/2021. After I e-filed it and got an notification that Federal and State accepted my 2020 return. However, I realized that I put something wrong and I need to correct it. I tried to amend it via TurboTax, but I'm getting the following message:

IRS is still working on finishing up the Amended Return area (Form 1040x) for 2020.

When can I file amend 2020 return? Can I use e-file or must be mailed by paper?

IRS says it can be done electronically. When can I do it?

If you need to amend your 2019 or 2020 Forms 1040 or 1040-SR you can now file the Form 1040- X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return electronically using available tax software products.

Slow down. 

You cannot amend a tax return that was just accepted.   You have to wait for it to be processed by the IRS.  Trying to send in an amended return while they are still processing the original return could confuse things and delay your refund for months.

Do not try to change anything on your return now.  When you amend, your Form 1040X has to be prepared from the return exactly the way it looked when you filed it originally.   You have to wait.   Once your return has been processed you will complete a Form 1040X   --- which is not yet available --- and submit it to amend the mistakes made when you filed your original return. It takes the IRS at least four months to process an amended return.

TheForm 1040X does not become available in the software until the end of March 2021 (subject to change).
