what forms to send with 1040-X

I'm doing 1040-X for the tax year 2024.The only changes are a couple of different number on W-2 (thus I have a W-2c).

And yet, when TT prints the amended return to file by mail (too late for e-filing), it includes lots of forms which have not changed because of the amendment - e.g., Schedule B, Schedule D, etc.

Is this correct?

When mailing a TurboTax amended return (Form 1040-X) for a previous year, include the signed Form 1040-X, any new/updated schedules (e.g., Schedule A, B, C) that changed, and copies of any new tax forms (like W-2s or 1099s) that support the changes; however, you don't need to include the original return with the 1040-X. See this IRS webpage for more information.

To complete a Form 1040-X, you'll need the following information:

  • a copy of the original tax return that's being amended
  • W-2s
  • schedules
  • worksheets
  • corrected information and calculations
  • any forms needed to support corrections

See  this tax tips article for more information about filing an amended return with IRS.

If the changes affect a state return, it should also be amended. See this TurboTax help article for more information.

I understand I need to send W-2c. What I don't understand is why TT includes lots of other forms into the "this is what you need to mail" PDF file.

Can you clarify?

When mailing an amended return, you only need to include the tax Forms & Schedules that changed, along with any supporting documentation or forms - like your W-2c.  So, obviously you need to include the 1040-X, Form 1040 & it's schedules that may have changed. If Schedule B or Schedule D didn't change, you don't need to include them.  That said, it's better to send a form that's not needed than to omit one that is.  They won't penalize you for sending a form that's not needed.
