What do I do if I already filed my 2020 tax return and claimed the recovery rebate in order to get my stimulus check? I finally received my check in the mail. So now what

I didn't think I was going to receive a paper check because it had been so long, so I filed my 2020 taxes to receive it that way. But a week later I finally got the paper check in the mail. So Im not sure what I should do now.

Great news! You have a one-time opportunity to make that correction on your tax return.  Go here for instructions on getting your tax return back to make these corrections.  You must act by 6 February.

If you want to review and update your 2020 return, please enter your information here by February 6, to have your 2020 tax return sent back to you.  You will then receive an email from TurboTax on February 8, letting you know that your return is available and providing you with detailed instructions on how to review, update and re-file your tax return without the Recovery Rebate Credit.

As dnasbricks2 mentions, since the IRS has not yet started returns, you may be able to retrieve your return and make the changes.  Please see the instructions in this article:

I've already claimed the Recovery Rebate Credit. How can I review and update my 2020 tax return?

You must act quickly -- the deadline for applying to retrieve your return is February 6!

Hi!

I completed the online forum on 2/5 before the 2/6 deadline. I have not received an email from TurboTax  (as promised) to adjust the recovery rebate credit on my return & resubmit. Has anyone received an email with the ability to adjust their return? Is there anything I can do?

When I call into Turbo Tax, 3 representatives told me I need to wait until my return is processed & adjust after that.

From what my manager just told me, they are addressing these in batch, which basically means that they will/are getting to yours if you submitted by the 6th. If for some reason the deadline has been missed, you do not need to amend or do anything further. The IRS will perform their own reconciliation of this (they are already fully staffed for this in order to ensure the minimal amount of dollars refunded to those who actually did receive these 2nd payments) and there is no further action on your part aside from making sure they do not include this in your refund. If this should happen, then technically you've been accidentally overpaid on the refund and they will come looking for it eventually. Just letting you know as I've dealt with the IRS (on the client side) for many years.
