TurboTax will let you e-file as of some time on January 4. They (and other tax software companies) allow that to garner marketshare. Even if you e-file early, your return will just sit on a server— going no place—-until the IRS begins to accept/reject e-files later in January. Before you hurry to e-file, make sure you have entered everything correctly and completely, because once your e-file is pending on the server, it is trapped and you cannot change anything.
One of the options you can select when you are ready to file is to get a refund advance loan, You do not receive any money until your e-file has been accepted by the IRS—-and the IRS will not begin to accept e-files until at least mid to late January.
And…..do not file a tax return without ALL of your income documents; you must include every 2023 W-2 on the same tax return. Employers have until the end of January to issue W-2’s. Wait until you have all of your W-2’s. Clients, schools, Social Security, banks and other financial institutions may not have tax documents available until late January/early February. ALL of your tax documents must be entered on the same Form 1040; do not file unless you have entered everything.
You cannot receive a refund advance until the IRS accepts your tax return. The IRS has not yet announced a date when they will start accepting 2023 tax returns. Last week they sent out a notice saying that they expect to announce a start date "later this month" (January).
