I’m very confused on how you have to file separately if you work in one state and live in another. I needed help gaining access to the documents stating I filed for the state in which I was working in but apparently there is a specific code that I need that verifies that I filed for that state. Do you have to file separately if you work in one state and live in another? I would think it would be a general understanding that if I’m filing once then the state and the IRS both have this information.

Please be more specific. What state do you live in? What state did you work in? Some states have reciprocal agreements. There are also some states with no state income tax. We need to know which two states are involved. In general, if you live in a state with a state income tax and work in another state with a state income tax, you need to file a non-resident tax return for the state you work in and a resident tax return for the state you live in.
No---there is not just a "general understanding" of your situation by the IRS or the states.
No one in the user forum can resolve a billing issue. If you have a question about your TurboTax fees or billing, make sure you use the word “billing” in your request for help. Do not use the word “refund.”
STATES WITH RECIPROCAL AGREEMENTS
States with no state income tax:
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming
Sure. I lived in Louisiana and worked in Texas. The Louisiana State Revenue says I owe them because I didn’t file at all for a specific year (2021) but according to the documents I have with TurboTax I did file. My misunderstanding when saying the ‘general understanding’ is my general understanding of things which of course I was clearly not aware that you have to file separately. Apparently what I need to prove that I filed is for that specific document called the IT-540 which I am unaware of how to obtain. All I can do at this point is print and send the documents I have with TurboTax to the Louisiana State Revenue and hope for the best. If that makes any sense. I filed for the IRS but not for the state.. I’m guessing that’s why I don’t have that IT-540 document.
TX has no state income tax, so there was nothing for you to file for TX. But if you lived in LA you were subject to paying income tax to the state of LA. You should have filed a resident state return for LA for that year. The state is correct.
Why do I have documents with TurboTax stating I filed? Am I supposed to pay them for something I already did?
The duration of the time I lived in Louisiana was two months before the year ended. This is wild.
Then you prepare a part-year return for LA and pay LA tax on the income you received while you lived in LA.
ALLOCATE PART YEAR
