I have filled my 2017 federal and state taxes through turbotax and they both got approved. Since I am a j1 visa holder, I can not file my taxes with turbotax because I need to file a 1040NR. Do I have to amend my taxes? Or can I simply add the 1040NR form somehow since I filled very early within the year of 2018. I have tried to amend the taxes but it said I have to wait till October to file 1040X.

As Marilyn advised, you should wait until your original return is processed, However, you cannot prepare the amended return with Turbotax. You would need to fill out form 1040NR plus form 8843 plus form 1040X.

Wait until you receive your Refund from your original filed return.  Save a copy of your original filed return on your computer.

Then go to OTHER TAX SITUATIONS > OTHER TAX FORMS > AMEND A RETURN to prepare the 1040X.  

You will print and mail the Amended Return.  It takes about 12 weeks to process.

that instruction doesn't really solve the problem, as that does not prepare the correct return
