Question

I went on February 28,2018 to verify my identity. Why would it take 6-9 weeks to receive my refund?

I don't understand why it would take so long to receive my refund and I don't owe anything

Because it lands on an IRS employee's desk to be verified and processed manually.  The IRS is woefully understaffed.

I filed January 19. Recieved the verification letter the end of February and did my verification on March 28 after being told i had to do the verification in person and have yet to see a processing date still says a date will be provided at a sooner time blah blah blah been almost a month since my verification. I’ve given up on even stressing about it anymore

I've been checking my refund status. I had to verify my identity on May 25 and the 9 weeks was up on Friday July 26. It still says it's processing. Where can I go to find out more information? Thank you in advance.

You can call the irs after 9 weeks. Chances are if they had a need for more info then they would have sent a letter to you. But there are ppl that can answer your questions. The local office is where I go because they give more info and in person. The lady I talked to was awesome and lovely. She verified me and told me a lot of info about why this is happening now

I went on June 5 2019 to verify my identity and they told me it would take up to nine weeks for the refund. Our refund was accepted on Jan 28th so after the 9 weeks I called IRS and they told me on that call it would be another 60 days...today is August 17th and still nothing it still says processing.

So I just went through the same issue. I know this is old and I hope you received your refund by now lol...

But anyways, 01/23/2020 I filed..01/27/2020 I got accepted. 21 days passed and my bars dissapeared, I called and they told me that I should have received a letter by now about verifying my identity..2 days passed I didn't get any letter so I called again and he told me that because it was sent out the day I called the first time that it should be in my mailbox in the next 4 days smh...03/02/2020 I verified my identity over the phone. She told me it can take up to 9 weeks but usually doesn't take the whole 9. Started to think I would have to wait the whole 9 weeks until today! Last night, like every night before,I would check the wmr app and it was showing the same message. Today I get a notification from my bank stating that my direct deposit has arrived 4 days early..I checked it and there it was!! Still no update on the wmr app...but I have my money so I'm happy!!! Hate that we had to go through that but im glad its over. Don't worry it'll be over with soon everyone else!

@michelle2730

Usually, after successful verification, it takes about 9 weeks to complete processing. Alot of people, as noted above have reported receiving within 5-6 weeks.

Here is some information from the IRS site:

What happens after I verify online or after I call?

We’ll continue processing your return. It will take approximately nine weeks to process.

Because things change in everyday lives. I've filed the same way since I was 16, 16 years ago, and when you move, adopt/ have babies, job changes, etc...it can change your situation greatly. A LOT of scammers are now taking ppls info. The lady at the IRS I talked to says that a lot of ppl come in and small things will be changed. They have wrong numbers on returns, diff bank account info, never even filed returns, and other things that you would never notice. I've had to verify the last 2 YEARS due to whatever reason, and I still don't have any refund info. I verified 6/17/2022 for 2021 and 2020. Hoping it won't take 9 weeks because it's going towards our home and some remodeling, but I am glad at least they're looking out for the small ppl. It's aggravating yes, but it would be even more aggravating to have to change ALL my personal info because a scammer pos got MY refund in their account. Once that happens it can take years up yo a decade, if any chance at all, you ever see that money.  Be patient.

Was thinking the same thing. Did it really take 9weeks?

@MrAntoineP as woefully backlogged as the IRS is on a number of issues, 9 weeks may be 'terrific'.

I’ve still not received mine. I verified myself in February and files in January and still nothing. It say’s approved but still processing.

If it has been longer than 21 days since your refund has been in approved status, please see our Help Article for further information.
