State return rejected for missing TIN on 1099-NEC

State return rejected and federal accepted. Return rejected by state for missing TIN for a 1099-NEC. When I went in to fix after receiving email from turbo tax I found it could only be entered on the accepted federal return.  Has this change (addition of TIN) now showing on state return within TurboTax? There is no way to see this on state return!
I’m also shocked turbo tax didn’t catch this error. Will this also affect my federal return? Amounts are correct and business name provided, but I forgot to enter TIN from the form into TurboTax

No, the additional of a tax identification number will not change your federal return. There are some pieces of information that must be entered in the federal return even though they may affect your state return.

I am sure the number doesn't show on the federal or state return, but your state must require it to complete the e-file process.

State return rejected for missing TIN on 1099-NEC

Julie,

Do you feel this will slow the processing of my federal return? Will federal send correspondance for missing info?

You are correct in that it doesn't affect tax liability or change any calculations. I did go into the federal return to add the TIN number so it would update the state return. It did indeed update to reflect on the state return as it has now been accepted.

I do have concerns that this may cause a delay in federal processing. Any ideas why the software wouldnt catch this missing info? Thank you!

This will not slow your federal processing at all.  The federal efile system does not require the information from the 1099-NEC be correct in order to be transmitted.  The state does.

The system is not set up with every EIN of every payer in the country.  It can't review your EINs for you, unfortunately.

State return rejected for missing TIN on 1099-NEC

Hello,

so clearly it didn’t prohibit federal from being accepted, but my questions are this…

1. Will the missing EIN number cause delays in my return being approved? Should I be on the look out for communication requesting additional info from the IRS for this missing piece of information?

2. The TurboTax software didn’t prompt me to revisit this section even though there was missing information (TIN/EIN not entered). This is what I’m surprised by as I would expect it to bring lack of information to my attention and especially because state return required it. So my issue isn’t the software checking for the EIN/TIN to be correct, but rather that no info was entered for this and it didn’t prompt me for missing information.

No, the IRS accepted your return as it was filed. A missing state TIN has no impact on the processing of your federal return at all. It will not delay your return and you will not get an IRS letter as a result of this.

FYI ... you do NOT need to enter the 1099-NEC in the program at all ... only the income needs to be reported on the correct form like the Sch C .... so in the future skip the 1099-NEC entry screens and simply enter your total income in the other income section of the Sch C entry section.   The 1099-NEC entries in the program is immaterial and only serves to "add up" all your amounts like an overpriced calculator.

This will also correct your state issue ... so if you want go back to the Sch C entry section and delete the 1099-NEC form and simply put the amount on the other income line ... this will change nothing on the already filed federal return.   In the 30 years in the business I have NEVER entered a 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC in any tax program ... I have only entered the total income amount ... and none of my clients have ever had an issue.
