California requires electronic payments if you:
- Make an estimated tax or extension payment over $20,000
- File a return with a tax liability over $80,000
- Have been notified by the State of California that you must pay electronically based on prior years
If none of these conditions apply to your situation, you can just change your filing option back to pay by mail.
This is how to change that option in TurboTax:
- Log in and select State, then Prepare State.
- Click Edit to the right of California.
- Continue until you get to Need to Make Electronic Payments Based on a Prior Year?
- Answer No.
- Continue through the end of the return.
